From swinging a bat or shooting a ball into a Little Tikes hoop the moment he could stand up on his own, sports have been at the forefront for Ben Auten. Back then it was chasing a childhood dream of being a professional athlete, and now it has become chasing professional dreams as a sports broadcaster, but the love and passion Ben has for sports has never changed.
Born and raised in the Carolinas and the son of a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate, basketball quickly became an important part of Ben’s life. An introduction to Tee Ball and a fandom of the not-too-distant Atlanta Braves meant baseball shortly followed, adding to an ever-growing list of sports he loves.
During his time at nationally recognized Academic Magnet High School, Ben traded in his playing days for a newfound love for broadcasting. A few years later, he traveled halfway across the country to begin chasing this dream at Texas Christian University. One of the few universities in the world with a dedicated Sports Broadcasting major, Ben gained countless insights and experiences into the profession with access to the high-level platforms of TCU Baseball and Women’s Basketball.
Now in his fourth year at Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina, Ben works as the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Media & Broadcasting, where his roles include various Sports Information duties along with being the play-by-play “Voice of the Fleet”. Last summer, Ben also had the opportunity to be a play-by-play broadcaster for the 2023 Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament, one of the premier Division II baseball conferences in the country.
A lifelong fan, Ben strives to entertain, teach, and story tell for his audiences. He hopes listeners leave each broadcast with the passion and joy that were instilled in him by the broadcasters he grew up watching and hearing.
